How to reach us at Catarata Del Toro and Blue Falls of Costa Rica is actually very easy. Use the popular apps Waze or Google Maps and voila! Warning for GPS users provided by the car rental companies: they do not work! After 12 years of informing them: We do not exist, Bajos Del Toro does, but you will make a loop of hours! Our advice: do not hire any GPS-device, it will save you money and even more important: you will not limit your vacation experiences. Use a real map instead or the before mentioned apps. Tip: download the offline maps to your cellphone ar tablet before coming to Costa Rica.

Know that Costa Rican roads and road signs are slightly different than most visitors are used to. We will try to guide you straight to our place. And remember: Catarata Del Toro and Blue Falls of Costa Rica fits always in everybody’s schedule. You can combine a visit to Catarata Del Toro and Blue Falls of Costa Rica on your way to or from the Arenal area or the Saripiquí area. We are located exactly halfway. You will love it.

Option 1
Take the InterAmerican Highway (Ruta 1) to the North – direction San Ramon – Guanacaste. Take the exit Naranjo and follow the signs to Zarcero, you will go through downtown Naranjo. As you enter Zarcero turn right after the church and park. This will lead you uphill to Palmira – Pueblo Nuevo and then down to Bajos Del Toro. Keep going. After 6 km and 3 bridges you will find Catarata Del Toro and Blue Falls of Costa Rica on your left-hand side. Welcome!

This route will take 90 minutes from the airport and 2 hours from San José.

Option 2
Take the InterAmerican Highway (Ruta 1) to the North – direction San Ramon – Guanacaste. Take the exit Grecia and drive straight up into Grecia. Pass the red church on your left-hand side, turn left, followed by the first right. Road signs already indicate ‘Sarchí’. After 250 meters, before the gas station, follow the main road to the left. You are on the main road now to Sarchí. And for your confirmation soon you will pass on your left-hand side the new mall ‘Plaza Grecia’. You will find all over Grecia road signs to this place so in case of an emergency try to find this landmark.

Follow this road for 5 kilometers till you enter the first part of Sarchí. Start looking on the left for the famous Joaquin Chaverri Cart Factory. Slow down! Turn right just before the chart factory, after 100 meters turn left and immediately right. Follow this road for the next 25 km or 45 minutes. Meanwhile you will pass the little town of ‘La Luisa’ and the road will bring you higher and higher. Just keep going and enjoy the views. After the road goes down again you will enter the town Bajos Del Toro Amarillo – keep going. After 6 km and 3 bridges you will find Catarata Del Toro and Blue Falls of Costa Rica on your left-hand side. Welcome!

This scenic route will take 90 minutes from the airport and 2 hours from San José.

Take ‘Ruta 4’ towards San Miguel or La Fortuna and get off the main road at the new intersection to La Fortuna by turning right. At top of viaduct turn left and follow the road all the way to San Miquel, what is the old road now. In San Miguel turn right and drive towards Rio Cuatro, pass this town. Keep going straight, pass the bridge, go up and then after 1 kilometer take first turn left. We have signs there!

Follow those signs for 14 kilometers uphill. It will take you 15 to 20 minutes. You will pass first the town of La Colonia followed shortly after by a new Baily bridge. Just keep going for another 7 minutes and finally you will find Catarata Del Toro and Blue Falls of Costa Rica on your right-hand side. This route will take 1 hour and if this is a de-tour on your way to La Fortuna it will cost you only 30 minutes extra.

Take the road to Muelle (Ruta 4), continue road, take exit Aquas Zarcas and in Aquas Zarcas turn left towards Venecia. Pass Venecia using the main road and after 3 kilometers you will pass a big bridge over the Rio Toro, then just 2 kilometers more and turn right. We have signs there!

Follow those signs for 14 kilometers uphill. It will take you 15 to 20 minutes. You will pass first the town of La Colonia followed shortly after by a new Baily bridge. Just keep going for another 7 minutes and finally you will find Catarata Del Toro and Blue Falls of Costa Rica on your right-hand side. This route will take 1,5 hours.

From the Poás Volcano park drive back to the town of Poasito: turn left on ruta 120 and after 6 kilometers you will see an intersection, with on the opposite side a gas station: turn left. Road leads you to Varablanca, Cariblanco and finally San Miquel. When reaching San Miquel, make, at the police station which is located in the corner of the intersection, an almost 180 degrees left turn. After 4 kilometers, you will pass the town of Rio Cuatro. Keep going straight, pass the bridge, go up and then after 1 kilometer take first turn left. We have signs there!

Follow those signs for 14 kilometers uphill. It will take you 15 to 20 minutes. You will pass first the town of La Colonia followed shortly after by a new Baily bridge. Just keep going for another 7 minutes and finally you will find Catarata Del Toro and Blue Falls of Costa Rica on your right-hand side. This route will take 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Option 1
Drive first to the InterAmerican (Ruta 1) and turn right towards San Jose – San Ramon. After the mountains, you will pass San Ramon, till here it will be one hour. Keep going on the highway towards San José. Take Exit Naranjo and follow the signs Zarcero, you will go through downtown Naranjo. As you enter Zarcero turn right after the church and park. This will lead you uphill to Palmira – Pueblo Nuevo and then down to Bajos Del Toro. Keep going. After 6 km and 3 bridges you will find Catarata Del Toro and Blue Falls of Costa Rica on your left-hand side. Welcome! This route will take 2 hours.

Option 2
Drive first to the InterAmerican (Ruta 1) and turn right towards San Jose – San Ramon. After the mountains, you will pass San Ramon, till here it will be one hour. Keep going on the highway towards San José. Take Exit Naranjo – go up 2 kilometers and turn right to Sarchí. Just before Sarchí you will see big signs of ‘Botanical Garden Else Kientzler’. Follow those signs. If you are in front of their place just keep driving uphill for the next 45 minutes. Follow this road for the next 25 km or 45 minutes. Meanwhile you will pass the little town of ‘La Luisa’ and the road will bring you higher and higher. Just keep going and enjoy the views. After the road goes down again you will enter the town Bajos Del Toro Amarillo – keep going. After 6 km and 3 bridges you will find Catarata Del Toro and Blue Falls of Costa Rica on your left-hand side. Welcome! This scenic route will take 2 hours.

Drive to Sarchí, after the gas station turn left, second crossing turn right and keep going. You can also follow the road signs from ‘Botanical Garden Else Kientzler’. If you are in front of their place just keep driving uphill for the next 25 km or 45 minutes. Meanwhile you will pass the little town of ‘La Luisa’ and the road will bring you higher and higher. Just keep going and enjoy the views. After the road goes down again you will enter the town Bajos Del Toro Amarillo – keep going. In San Carlos try to find the road to Aquas Zarcas or La Marina. You will find it east of the Kentucky Fried Chicken next to the park. If you pass a Shell gas station within 5 minutes you are on the right track. Keep driving, straight through Aguas Zarcas all the way to Venecia. Pass Venecia using the main road and after 3 kilometers you will pass a big bridge over the Rio Toro, then just 2 kilometers more and turn right. We have signs there!

Driving tips for Costa Rica

If you have a driver license you should be able to drive in daytime and nighttime, drive slowly and carefully, expect the unexpected (never be surprised or get angry it is just Costa Rica and not downtown Fort Lauderdale), obey the laws (tickets are high!), know what is North, South, East and West, use a map and common sense, always have a good spare tire and know how to use it, flashlight and drinking water, fill up the tank when you have the chance and please do not forget to enjoy the amazing views. Enjoy!

And if you want to drive off the beaten paths? Welcome, now you will see the real Costa Rica. If you think that you are lost…just keep going! Do not forget to buy a towline, extra drinkingwater, food, and buy in the first ‘Ferreteria’ you see a machete, a long one! And use common sense double! Keep driving! Enjoy!

By bus

You may take the daily bus service (except Thursday) from:
– Grecia (15.00 hours) – Catarata Del Toro (17.00 hours) – Rio Cuatro (18.00 hours).
– Rio Cuatro (05.45 hours) – Catarata Del Toro (06.15 hours) – Grecia (08.15 hours).

If you are coming with the bus you should plan to spend the night with us.

Travel tip: If you are on your way to Volcano Arenal or the Saripiqui area, it’s easy to stop by ‘Catarata Del Toro’. Please do, you will love it.
