The Birding Club of Costa Rica:

Recent Outing: Catarata del Toro, May 24,25

> The Birding Club of Costa Rica held its May outing Saturday, Sunday, May 24th and 25th at Catarata del Toro park near Bajo del Toro Amarillo. Sixteen enthusiastic birders braved torrential afternoon rains Saturday hiking on the property. Most of our feathered friends had sought shelter, which we soon did also. A great boca spread made up for the rain. The following morning was clearer and we set out once more, as the birds were also out. Guide Richard Garrigues coaxed several out of the brush with his recordings, to the delight of the participants. Forty-three species were noted. Back at the restaurant we were served a good Tico breakfast after which Richard gave us a brief lecture on distinguishing the nine varieties of hummingbirds who were active at the feeders that morning. The location is close enough to San José for a day trip, the 400 foot waterfall is spectacular, the restaurant is very good, and Will and his staff were exceptionally cordial. Many of us will be back to what the owners advertise as "Costa Rica's Ultimate Secret." -- Cyndy Vorih
